Why a Teacher’s Job is More Important to Democrats than Your’s
By Rod Pennington
Congressional Democrats are pushing to finish up business before the August recess so they can skedaddle home and put a happy face on some of the unpopular items they voted for. For the next few weeks expect to hear a lot about the need to save the jobs of teachers. It will be a steady chorus coming from every politician with a “D” after their name.
The big question no one seems to be asking is why is a teacher’s job more important than anyone else’s? Why aren’t the Democrats storming the ramparts to keep the dental hygienists and claims adjusters employed? Why don’t they have the same zeal when it comes to auto mechanics and bricklayers?
The answer is money. Whenever you hear a Democrat preaching the important of “saving teaching jobs” your internal BS detector should activate. Also, perk up when you hear them talking about helping the “cash strapped” states. Teacher’s unions, public employee unions and trial lawyers are the geese that lay the golden campaign eggs and the Democrats are more than willing to use your tax dollars to keep they well-fed.
Here are a few quick facts the Democrats really don’t want to discuss:
During the current recession the country has lost 8 million jobs in the private sector. During the same period public employment has risen slightly.
Nearly one third of the “Stimulus” money went directly to states to protect the jobs of teachers and other public employees. Now, a year later, that money has been spent and the states are back at the trough again looking for a refill.
During the healthcare debate the Democrats produced a bill that went into excruciating detail. It covered everything imaginable except what many consider the biggest causes of the explosion in the cost of coverage. Malpractice insurance and the “defensive” medicine many doctor practice to keep the legal jackals at bay. The Democrats managed to tiptoe around the 800 pound gorilla in the corner and artfully avoided any changes in the malpractice laws.
In the “Heavy Hitter’s” section of OpenSecrets.org, a non-profit that tracks all campaign contributions, there is some interesting reading.
The American Federation of Teachers gave 100% to Democrats.
The Association of State, County and Municipal Employees gave 99% to Democrats, the other 1% when to independents.
The American Association of Justice (trial lawyers) gave 97% to Democrats and 3% to “Republicans”. With Arlen Specter leaving the Senate, this percentage will likely go up.
If you want the Democrats to consider your job as important as a teacher’s or a public sector employee’s, form your own union and donate a few hundred million dollars to their campaign fund. If you really want to be totally protected; provide “volunteers” to work phone banks and rough up senior citizens at Tea Party rallies.
The Democratic Party knows who is buttering their bread and they are not about to bite the hand that feeds them. That this quid pro quo is legal – give us campaign cash and we’ll bust the treasury so you keep your job — is hardly surprising. Like a congressional aide replied when informed something was illegal, “It’s just a law, we’ll change it.”
Why the Republicans don’t call them on this is baffling but pretty typical of the dysfunctional way they operate. When it comes to playing political hardball, the Republicans are the gold standard for ineptness.
The real crime here is the mainstream media sees this looting of tax dollars to feather the bed of an entrenched special interest group and refuses to shout it from the roof tops. Then the MSM scratches their collective heads and wonders why they are losing their audience.
