The new Toyota Prius 2016 will have an official premier in Las Vegas on September 8, the first vehicle that features the Toyota New Global Architecture, the new modular platform.
The company describes the all-new Prius as ‘the next era of an icon’. The teaser image released by the company showed a black background with a bright-red squiggle in the center which is purportedly the upcoming model’s taillight profile.
The TNGA is designed to simplify the car manufacturing process, while cutting production costs by 20%. The TNGA-based production is expected to give a more robust chassis and a lower center of gravity in future Toyota vehicles for improved handling. The new Prius is expected to compete with hybrid cars like Ford’ C-Max and Chevrolet’s Volt and all-electric vehicles like Kia Soul EV, Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.
The Toyota Prius 2016 is fitted with a more efficient gas-electric hybrid system and is expected to deliver mileage of 55-58 mpg, 10% more than its predecessor. Additionally, the new Prius is 20% more light-weight than the previous model. The gas motor will feature 1.8L 4-cylinder thermal efficient engine capable of delivering 148 horsepower.
Two battery options are expected to be available for buyers, one will feature an expensive lithium-ion battery with higher power capacity and another one will be a more economical nickel-metal-hydride battery. The battery pack also has been redesigned for enhanced efficiency and promises an all-electric range of 35 miles, far better than the previous model’s 11 mile range. The redesigned battery pack also contributes towards saving the weight of the vehicle.
The brand-new Toyota Prius 2016, featuring an all-wheel drive system, has been given a sleek and aerodynamic design. The sharper edges and LED lights give the 4th generation Prius model a striking new profile. The car’s cabin is expected to feature a large-display infotainment system fitted with HVAC controls, a transmission indicator, live-data information and an upper speedometer display. Both the exterior and interior design of the all-new Prius offers it a simple and clean appearance.
For those eager car enthusiasts across the globe, the media event of the launch can be viewed via a livestream link set up by the company.
