It was a mixed week for the major markets.
For the week the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 41.32 points or 0.40%.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped -1.06 points or -0.10%,
The Nasdaq Composite dropped -14.77 points or -0.65%.

It is mixed news for BP. Crews have returned to the Gulf after heading to shore in advance of tropical storm “Bonnie”. The storm, which never came close to hurricane strength, fell apart over the weekend. During the evacuation period the cap which had been in placed over the rupture continued to hold, effectively stopping the leak.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 90.42 points or 4.15%

Moments after being sworn in, Sen. Carte Goodwin (D-WV) got to cast his first vote. It won’t be a moment he will soon forget. His was the deciding “yea” that broke a filibuster of the extension of unemployment benefits by the Republicans. The final tally was 60-40; exactly the minimum required.
