Moments after being sworn in, Sen. Carte Goodwin (D-WV) got to cast his first vote. It won’t be a moment he will soon forget. His was the deciding “yea” that broke a filibuster of the extension of unemployment benefits by the Republicans. The final tally was 60-40; exactly the minimum required.

The Obama Administration and British Petroleum went eye to eye and the Feds blinked first.

This is one of those silly food fights that breakout in Washington with jarring regularity. Both sides want to see unemployment benefits extended. The Democrats want to put the cost on their MasterCard and leave it for the next generation to payoff. The Republicans want to use some of the billions in unspent stimulus funds instead of adding to the national debt.

On Thursday, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said “a filibuster is not off the table” with regards to Pres. Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan. In many ways James White is the typical Republican. Running for the Texas Statehouse from rural East Texas, he is a fiscal conservative and has strong religious beliefs. He is pro-life and pro-gun.
